Trustees approve retirements of veteran faculty members

KALAMAZOO--The retirements of 58 faculty members who have collectively served Western Michigan University for more than 1,900 years were approved Feb. 27 by the WMU Board of Trustees.

Among those retiring are 29 faculty members with 35 or more years of service, including eight who have been at the University for 40 or more years.

Included in those retiring is Dr. Diether H. Haenicke, president emeritus and Distinguished University Professor. Haenicke stepped down as president in 1998 after 13 years at the helm, but remained on the faculty to teach German and comparative literature in the Department of Foreign Languages.

All of the faculty members who are retiring are doing so with emeriti status. Their names, titles, units, years of continuous service and effective dates of retirement by college are as follows.

College of Arts and Sciences: Dr. Leonard J. Beuving, professor of biological sciences, 34 years, effective April 26, 2004; Dr. Gary T.
