Several roads closed through mid-August

April 22, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Major road work begins on the "West District Development Project" at Western Michigan University Monday, April 26, and continues through mid-August.

Roads closed throughout the construction include West Michigan Avenue, Knollwood Avenue and Rankin Avenue in the construction area east of Howard Street and the northbound lanes of Howard from Lawson Arena to north of Campus Point Mall.

During this phase of the project, pedestrian walkways and roads, including WMU's first roundabout, are being constructed in the area between Haenicke Hall and Howard Street. Proposed new buildings for admissions, a welcome center and the WMU Bookstore are not part of this phase of the project, and construction on the buildings has not been scheduled.

Detours

Through northbound traffic on Howard Street is being detoured west to Drake Road. Campus traffic and traffic for private businesses in the construction area, such as the University Bookstore, is being rerouted along the ring roads: Knollwood Avenue, Western Avenue, North Dormitory Road, Goldsworth Drive and Rankin Avenue.

Buildings north of the construction area, including the Fetzer Center, Schneider Hall, Welborn Hall, and businesses in the University Plaza, including Campus Kitchen, Copy Desk, Shawarma King restaurant and The Spirit Shoppe, can be approached only by going south on Rankin Avenue.

Buildings south of the construction area, including Faunce Student Services Building, Parking Services Building, Trimpe Building and the University Bookstore can be approached only by going north on Knollwood Avenue.

Up-to-date information and a detour map are available on the WMU Construction Web pages at <www.wmich.edu/construction>.
