Biological sciences awards announced

KALAMAZOO--Twelve outstanding students were recently honored by the Western Michigan University Department of Biological Sciences. The students received their awards at a departmental spring luncheon.

Biological Sciences Award Recipients

John J. Couture of Kalamazoo received the Leo C. Vander Beek Gradaute Student in Plant Biology Award, a $500 award given to a beginning graduate student in plant biology in memory of a distinguished faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences who served for 33 years.

Greg M. Delgoffe of Menominee, Mich., was named the Distinguished Senior in Biomedical Sciences, a $200 award given to an outstanding senior biomedical sciences major with a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Bethany R. Huot of Kalamazoo was named the Distinguished Senior in Biology, a $200 award given to an outstanding senior biology major with a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Justin J. Koenig of Auburn, Ind., was named the Distinguished Preprofessional in Biological Sciences, a $200 award given to the student deemed by faculty to be the outstanding biology or biomedical sciences major in a preprofessional curriculum. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Brenton K. Lehmkuhl of Galesburg, Mich., received the Olga Maltseva Award in Microbiology, a $200 award named in honor of the late Maltseva, who was a biological sciences faculty member.

Jean M. Maager of Dowagiac, Mich., received the Margaret Thomas DuMond Award, a $500 award given to an upper-class biology or biomedical sciences major who has demonstrated outstanding potential for a career in biological sciences. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to receive the award, which honors a WMU alumna.

Jeffrey M. Muston of Flushing, Mich., was named the Distinguished Biological Sciences Graduate Student, a $200 award given to a student who has completed the requirements for a master of arts degree in biomedical sciences within the last year and who has shown outstanding research productivity.

April R. Reedy of Kalamazoo received the Merrill Wiseman Award in Microbiology, a $200 award named in honor of a distinguished professor who was on the biological sciences faculty for forty years. The award is made to an outstanding student in the field of microbiology.

Eric M. Roskelley of Kalamazoo was named the Distinguished Biological Sciences Graduate Student, a $200 award given to a student who has completed the requirements for a master of arts degree in biology within the last year and who has shown outstanding research productivity.

Rachel A. Schleichert
of Kalamazoo received a Colin J. Gould Memorial Scholarship, a
(cont.) $500 scholarship given to a Lee Honors College student majoring in the biological sciences. The award was established as a memorial to a student.

Cathryn E. Whately of Mattawan, Mich., received a Hazel Wirick Scholarship, a $1,000 award given by the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan Foundation to an upper-class biology major with a project in the area of botany or ecology. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Amy T. Young of Delton, Mich., received the Hazel Wirick Scholarship, a $1,000 award given by the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan Foundation to an upper-class biology major with a project in the area of botany or ecology. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
