Tom Knific honored as 'hometown hero'

Oct. 15, 2004

KALAMAZOO--Tom Knific, Western Michigan University professor of music, was honored as a "hometown hero" by the Kalamazoo County Convention & Visitor's Bureau at an Oct. 13 breakfast at the Fetzer Center.

Knific was lauded as the person responsible for bringing next year's International Society of Bassists annual convention to Kalamazoo. That event, set for June 6-11, 2005, is expected to attract some 1,000 bassists from 30 nations around the globe.

Chair of WMU's Jazz Studies Program, Knific has been a faculty member in the School of Music since 1987. He is an internationally known bassist and is president-elect of the International Society of Bassists.

Knific's newest CD, "Siena," was released at a Dalton Center Recital Hall concert Sept. 26, featuring many of the musicians who collaborated on the recording.
