WMU HOME > ABOUT WMU > WMU NEWS Dance troupe Momix comes to KalamazooNov. 5, 2004 KALAMAZOO--For 20 years, Momix, a company of dancer-illusionists under the direction of Moses Pendleton, has been celebrated for its ability to conjure up a world of surrealistic images. On Friday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m., Momix will transport its Miller Auditorium audience to yet another fantasy world with its performance of "Opus Cactus." The single performance of "Opus Cactus" culminates a two-day residency, which includes a school performance, a public master class and private master classes for WMU dance students. The four-day residency begins on Tuesday, Nov. 9, with a special matinee performance at Miller Auditorium for public school students. Then on Thursday, Nov. 11, Momix holds a free public master class from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ballet Arts located on Rambling Road just off of Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo. The public master class is limited to 30 participants. To sign up, call Miller Auditorium at (269) 387-2311 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing. The master class for WMU dance students is not open to the public. In an endless search for another gravity, Pendleton--who was previously with Pilobolus, which thrilled Miller Auditorium audiences last year--combines athletic dance, inventive props, magical lighting, outrageous costumes, humor and riveting music to create an energetic multimedia experience. Of "Opus Cactus," Clive Barnes of the New York Post cheered, "Inspired by the flora, fauna and simple magic of American Southwest, Moses Pendleton's ingenuity, theatricality and cunning imagination are seen at full stretch in strange vignettes of the Sonoran desert. Brilliant." Known internationally for presenting work of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty, the company has thrilled fans in more than 22 countries and has been featured on stage, screen and television. The Los Angeles Times says, "Momix continues to offer a concentrated blend of the superhuman and lyrical with the artistic." Tickets for Momix at Miller Auditorium range from $20 to $40 and are available by calling (269) 387-2300 or toll free (800) 228-9858, online at <www.millerauditorium.com>, or by visiting the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office or the Epic Center Box Office in downtown Kalamazoo.
