WMU HOME > ABOUT WMU > WMU NEWS Concert features music of the 'Great Swing Bands'Nov. 5, 2004 KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's instrumental jazz ensembles will present their annual "Tribute to the Great Swing Bands" at 8:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. Each year the award-winning University Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Lab Band present a concert of music from the era of the great swing bands. This year's concert features the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Boyd Raeburn, among others. The University Jazz Lab Band is directed by Tom Knific, and the University Jazz Orchestra is led by Scott Cowan. The orchestra has received national acclaim for its high performance standards and creative approach to big band jazz. The ensemble's CDs, "Spritely Overdue" (1996), "Disposable Income" (1997), "Blue Miles" (1998), "Sweet Tango" (1999) and "Cosmosis" (2001) have received rave reviews from the United States to London, and are available on Sea Breeze Vista Recordings. General admission tickets are $10 and are available through Miller Auditorium at (269) 387-2300 or toll free (800) 228-9858. Students and senior citizens will be charged $5 each.
