Ponchillia, chair of blindness and low vision studies at Western Michigan University, has been named one of five recipients of the Caring for Children Angel Award by Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Michigan. Ponchillia was presented the award Nov. 12 at the insurer's offices in Detroit. He received the honor after being nominated for his intensive work with children who are blind or visually impaired. Among his many activities, Ponchillia has organized sports camps for young people who are blind and visually impaired. His sports camps have become a national model.
