Top music students vie in annual Concerto Competition

Feb. 4, 2005

KALAMAZOO--The final round of Western Michigan University's annual Concerto Competition takes the Dalton Center Recital Hall stage at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13. There is no admission charge, and the public is invited to the competition performances by some of the university's top student musicians.

For the final competition, WMU students were competitively selected from five different performance areas in the School of Music--string, woodwind, brass/percussion, vocal and keyboard. Finalists will vie for the opportunity to perform as soloists with the University Symphony Orchestra, with guest conductor John Varineau, later this spring.

Judges for the 2005 Concerto Competition Finals are Susan B. Anthony, one of the world's leading sopranos and a School of Music alumna; Anne Berquist, executive/artistic director of Fontana Chamber Arts; and John Varineau, associate conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony Orchestra.
