WMU HOME > ABOUT WMU > WMU NEWS Hockey Mustangs finish undefeated 20-0 in CCWHAFeb. 21, 2005 KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's women's ice hockey club team, the Mustangs, finished the 2004-05 regular season with a perfect record against conference opponents and ranked No. 5 in the country heading into next month's national championship tournament. The Mustangs wrapped up the regular season at home with consecutive wins over conference rival Ohio State University, winning 6-0 and 6-3 on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19, respectively. The Mustangs outshot the Buckeyes 106-43 for the weekend en route to a perfect 20-0 record in the Central Collegiate Women's Hockey Association. Saturday's contest was the final home game of the season for the Mustangs and final game in Lawson Ice Arena for three senior captains, Rachel Bruff, a business management major from Darien, Ill.; Erica Higgins, a finance major from West Chicago, Ill.; and Mary Beth Trainor, a business and photography major from Canton, Mich. Finishing with an overall mark of 22-8-1 and No. 5 national ranking, the Mustangs advance to the American Collegiate Hockey Association's National Championship Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y., March 10-13. The Mustangs will play the No. 4-ranked University of Rhode Island in the first round of the ACHA tournament. In a contest played Jan. 13 at Kalamazoo's Wings Stadium, the Mustangs lost a hard-fought game to Rhode Island, 3-2 in overtime.
