Finals Finish helps students cruise into exam week

April 10, 2005

KALAMAZOO--Campus and community volunteers will be helping Western Michigan University students "cruise" through their final exams during Finals Finish 2005 from 6 to 11 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 18-19, in the Student Recreation Center.

Last year, 3,000 students participated in Finals Finish. Helping out at the event were numerous area businesses owners who donated their products and/or services and 38 faculty, staff and administrators who volunteered their time.

The event, now in its ninth year, allows students to use the SRC as a late night study and recreation area for the first two days of spring semester final exams. This year's program, "Cruis'n through Finals," has a car theme and is being sponsored by the Presidential Spirit Committee along with various University units and employee organizations.

"Students often feel stress during exam week--whether it's their first year in college or their last year," says Amy Seth, director of University Recreation. "Finals Finish offers various forms of stress relief and gives students a chance to relax, refuel and revive as they prepare for their exams."

The SRC will be extending its hours and offering students snacks, study rooms, a computer lab and open recreation facilities as well as massages, exercise classes, scuba lessons and contests. In keeping with the 2005 theme, there will be a car show in the indoor tennis area that features Hummers, street rods from Cole Classics and 2005 models from the Seelye and DeNooyer dealerships.

Seth notes that Finals Finish is a campus tradition that fosters spirit and pride. "It's one of the many ways we connect with students," she says, "and it's a chance to celebrate the end of the academic year."

This year's event sponsors include Big Burrito, Coca Cola, Equinox Dive & Training Center, Formula K, Hostess, the Kalamazoo Center for the Healing Arts, Kinko's, Little Caesar's, the Michigan Army National Guard, McDonalds, Roly Poly, Schafer's Flowers, Sweetwater's Donut Mill, Yoplait, the WMU Bookstore, and WMU Dining Services.
