Foreign language scholarships go to 39 students

KALAMAZOO--Thirty-nine Western Michigan University students honored for achievement this spring by the Department of Foreign Languages.

The department awarded scholarships totaling more than $19,000 at its Honors and Awards Day in April, an annual celebration that recognizes the achievements of outstanding students of foreign languages.

Matthew Birgy of Kalamazoo was awarded the Preis der Bundesrepublik, an award given to a student who exhibits outstanding work in the study of German.

Angela Book of Portage, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester. Book was also awarded the Herman E. Rothfuss Award for Excellence in German, a $1,000 award given to a student who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential, and the prestigious exchange scholarship for the Free University of Berlin.

Jessica Bradford of Elgin, Ill., was awarded the Sue C. Mardis Scholarship in French. The award provides financial assistance to a student for study in a French-speaking country, and was made possible through a donation by the family of the late Mardis, a high school language teacher.

Judith Bukenya of Kalamazoo was awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study
Abroad Award to pursue her studies in Russian outside of the United States.

Baird Carlson of Schoolcraft, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.

Emeka Charles of Kalamazoo was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Chelsea Davis of Jenison, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Christopher Detloff of Clinton Township, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Alicia Eby of Portage, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Jesse Gespach of Clyde, Mich., was awarded the Eunice E. Kraft Award in Classics, an award given to an outstanding student studying Latin or Greek.

Philip Grace of Kalamazoo was awarded the Victor Coutant Award in Classics, an award given to a student who exhibits outstanding work in the study of either Latin or Greek.

James Gregory of Novi, Mich., was awarded an $800 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in Latin, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.

Emily Gross of Kentwood, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Arabic Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Arabic.

Danielle Gureghian of White Lake, Mich., was awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in French outside of the United States.

Melanie Hancock of Dearborn, Mich., was awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in German outside of the United States.

Clifton Hartsuft of Kalamazoo was presented the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.

Alexander Hudson of Kalamazoo was awarded the Excellence in Italian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Italian.

Jason Jellies of Mattawan, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.

Koriel Jock of White Lake, Mich., received the Prix de liAlliance Franaaise, an award given to a student who demonstrates exemplary student involvement in French activities.

Daniel Kenzie of Plymouth, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Michael Kocisky of Naperville, Ill., was awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in Chinese outside of the United States.

Zachary Leonard of Bay City, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Japanese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Japanese.

Heather McAdam of Williamston, Mich., was chosen as the Western Michigan University Presidential Scholar in Foreign Languages. The Presidential Scholar designation reflects outstanding academic performance and is WMU's highest honor for undergraduates. McAdam also was the recipient of the Prix diHonneur de liAmbassadeur de France, an award given by the French Embassay to the outstanding student of French in the graduating class.

Janice Moses of Troy, Mich., was awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in French outside of the United States.

Mayssa Rasak of Kalamazoo was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Jeffrey Prindiville of Caledonia, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.

Keith Russo of Kalamazoo was awarded the Elizabeth Giedeman Award in Classics, an award given to a student who exhibits outstanding work in the study of either Latin or Greek.

Kylie Schultz of Kalamazoo was awarded the Excellence in Chinese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Chinese.

Walter Scott of Traverse City, Mich., was awarded a $1,000 President's Scholarship for Study Abroad, an award given to a foreign language major to study abroad for at least one semester.

Katie Shields of Muskegon, Mich., was awarded the John B. Dorstewitz Award in French, this award is given to a student who demonstrates excellence in the study of French, and is named in honor of a WMU French student who died in a 1997 accident.

Michelle Smith of Vicksburg, Mich., received the Frances E. Noble Prize for Excellence in French, an award given to the student with the highest grade point average in French among graduating French majors.

Jacob Tardani of Muskegon, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Arabic Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Arabic.

Elise Tillman of Grandville, Mich., was awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue her studies in French outside of the United States.

Michael Vanderhyde of Allegan, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.

Joseph Wagner of Gregory, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Japanese Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Japanese.

Peter Weir of Saline, Mich., was awarded the Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.

Katherine Wildes of Kalamazoo was awarded the $1,250 President's Award for Study Abroad, the premier award given to a foreign language major or minor to study abroad for at least one semester. Wildes was also awarded the Russian Club Award, and an Excellence in Russian Award, an award given to a student in recognition of academic achievement in Russian.

Kathleen Willard of Greenville, Mich., was awarded an $800 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in French, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential.

Robert Wishart of Flint, Mich., was awarded an $800 Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship in German, an award given to a foreign language major who demonstrates outstanding academic performance and potential. Wishart was also awarded a $500 Department Travel/Study Abroad Award to pursue his studies in German outside of the United States.
