Talk examines Pledge of Allegiance and the Constitution

KALAMAZOO--A Kalamazoo-based attorney will address constitutional law and the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance in a talk and discussion Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Western Michigan University.

The presentation, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 105 of the Bernhard Center, will feature Richard Reed, of the firm Lewis, Reed and Allen in Kalamazoo. Reed, a 1957 WMU graduate, is the winner of the 2005 Political Science Alumni Achievement Award. He earned his J.D. at the Detroit College of Law in 1962 and is well known as a participant in municipal tax disputes, frequently appearing as counsel to townships and other for municipal interests.

Reed has been active in the legal profession as a commissioner of the State Bar of Michigan, a member and chairman of the State Bar Representative Assembly and a member of the Attorney Grievance Commission. He also served on the board of directors of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society.

Reed's talk is sponsored by the WMU Pre-Law Society and by the political science department's Institute of Government and Politics.
