Slaughter, associate professor emeritus in health, physical education and recreation at Western Michigan University, died Oct. 19 in Kalamazoo. He was 94. A WMU alumnus, Slaughter was a coach and professor at WMU from 1948 until his retirement in 1976. In addition to his teaching duties during his tenure, he served as an assistant coach in football, basketball and baseball, coaching more than 1,600 athletes. He was named the "W" Club Man of the Year in 1979 and was a member of the WMU Hall of Fame. Slaughter was the author with colleague Harold Ray of the book "Go, Broncos!," which covered the history of the WMU football and men's basketball teams. Slaughter attended the University of Cincinnati and completed his undergraduate degree at WMU in 1935. He received a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1944 and did advanced studies at Michigan State University and Northwestern University, among others.
