Few campus services open during winter closure

KALAMAZOO--Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning Monday, Dec. 19, and will reopen Thursday, Jan. 5. WMU announced in September that it would alter its academic calendar, delay the start of spring semester and extend its 2005 winter closure to reduce energy costs [read more].

There are no public events on campus during the winter closure. Following a Saturday, Dec. 17, performance by the KSO Pops and Empire Brass at Miller Auditorium, the next public events on campus are men's and women's basketball games Saturday, Jan. 7, at University Arena.

With the end of fall semester, many campus services are closed or have reduced hours through the start of spring semester.

Residence halls open for spring semester at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.

Spring semester classes begin at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9.

Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

Admissions office is closed beginning Saturday, Dec. 17, and reopens Thursday, Jan. 5.

Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center Web site. With the exceptions of the WMU Bookstore, Campustrends and WMU Cards & Gifts, nearly all Bernhard Center stores and services are closed beginning Saturday, Dec. 17, until Thursday, Jan. 5.

WMU Bookstore, Campustrends and WMU Cards & Gifts have special hours Monday through Thursday, Dec. 19-22, and Thursday through Sunday, Jan. 5-8.

BCC lab (Bernhard Center computer lab) is closed and reopens 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 5-6; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7; 10 a.m. to midnight Sunday, Jan. 8; and resumes 24-hour operation at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9.

UCC lab is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 12-16; closed Dec. 17 to Jan. 4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 5-6; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7; noon to 10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9.

Sindecuse Health Center is open normal hours Dec. 12-16. The center and its pharmacy are open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19; Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. .21-22; and Tuesday, Jan. 3; and resumes normal hours Thursday, Jan. 5. The center is closed Tuesday, Dec. 20; Friday through Monday, Dec. 23-Jan. 2; Wednesday, Jan. 4; and Saturday, Jan. 7. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers.

Student Recreation Center is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Dec. 12-15; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16; closed Dec. 17 to Jan. 4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 5-6; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 9; and resumes normal hours at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Waldo Library is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Dec. 12-16; closed Dec. 17 to Jan. 4; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Jan. 5-6; closed Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7-8; and resumes normal hours, Monday, Jan. 9.
