WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News Ada E. BerkeyJan. 23, 2006 Ada E. Berkey, associate professor emerita and music librarian at Western Michigan University, died Dec. 23, 2005, in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was 88. Berkey joined the library faculty in 1947 and is credited with laying the foundation for WMU's music library, which is located in the Dalton Center. By the time of her retirement in 1975, she had overseen the growth of WMU's music reference materials in the Harper C. Maybe Music Library from a few hundred books to a collection of more that 3,500 books, 2,500 phonograph records, 40 periodical subscriptions and a large collection of choral music. Active on campus and in the community, she was a member of the Faculty Senate and president of the Faculty Women's Club. She helped form the Chamber Music Society of Kalamazoo. Berkey earned her bachelor's degree from Mount Holyoke College, a degree in library science from the University of Michigan and a master's degree from the University of Iowa.
