Broncos host Indiana State in Bracket Buster

Feb. 9, 2006

KALAMAZOO--ESPN has announced that Western Michigan University's men's basketball team will host Indiana State University of the Missouri Valley Conference on Bracket Buster Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. in University Arena.

This is the third straight year the Broncos have participated on Bracket Buster Saturday and the second time they have played host in the event. The Broncos defeated College of Charleston, 83-78, in overtime in 2004 and lost at Northern Iowa, 86-75, last season.

This year's Indiana State Sycamores won their first nine games of the season, including a 72-67 win over in-state rival Indiana University. Since then, ISU has lost 12 of 13 games.

"Indiana State is a talented team that will provide a great challenge for us in the Bracket Buster," WMU head coach Steve Hawkins said. "They were ranked in the top 25 at one point and they've beaten Indiana. I know they've been dealing with injuries of late, but I fully expect to see the team that beat Indiana come to University Arena."

The Broncos are 4-11 all-time against Indiana State with the last meeting coming in Terre Haute, Ind., in 1998 when the Broncos fell, 79-77. The last game in University Arena was Nov. 25, 1997, where the Broncos knocked off the Sycamores, 74-58. The series dates back to Jan. 24, 1942, when Indiana State won, 51-45.

As part of the agreement for being in the Bracket Buster pool of teams, WMU will play a game at Indiana State sometime during the 2006-07 season.

Tickets for the game are available through the WMU Athletic Ticket Office at (269) 387-8092 or (888) 4-WMU-TIX. Seats are available at regular tickets prices: $17 for chairback seats, $15 for lower level reserved, and $13 for upper-level reserved. Admission for WMU students is free with a valid student ID card.
