WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News Nursing's Thompson receives honorary degreeFeb. 18, 2006 KALAMAZOO--Dr. Joyce E. Thompson, of Western Michigan University's Bronson School of Nursing, will be presented with an honorary doctor of laws degree from Scotland's University of Dundee. She is being honored for her contributions to the field of midwifery and her work to improve maternal and child health around the globe. Thompson came to WMU from the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and was named the Bernardine Lacey Professor of Community Health Nursing, an endowed professorship established to honor the founding director of the Bronson School of Nursing. Thompson has served as director of the board of management of the International Confederation of Midwives, the highest elected office in the world for a midwife.
