Relay for Life accepting donations online

April 2, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Relay for Life of Western Michigan University is accepting donations through its Web site to support the walk-a-thon fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society at WMU's Kanley Track, Friday through Saturday, April 7-8.

Relay activities begin at noon Friday. WMU President Judith I. Bailey will be among those making welcoming remarks at an opening ceremony at 3 p.m. Friday, and the walk-a-thon continues through noon Saturday.

More than $21,000 has already been raised toward this year's goal of $61,000. The Relay for Life of WMU held one year ago raised $51,473 for the American Cancer Society.

About 50 relay teams have been formed, most of them by WMU student organizations. Some of the teams are open only to members of the respective organizations, but more than 20 teams are open to anyone who wants to join the fight against cancer and sign up to walk or jog at Kanley Track. All of the teams are accepting contributions from the general public to support their efforts.

With one week remaining before the event, the top fund-raising teams were WMU Faculty and Staff, with $2,686 raised, Colleges Against Cancer, with $1,645, and Western Student Association, with donations totaling $1,210.

To make a contribution, visit Relay for Life of Western Michigan University at www.acsevents.org/relay/mi/wmu and click on the name of a team at the right of the page. Click "More" for a complete list of teams. After selecting a team to support, you may make a general contribution to that team or a contribution through the personal page of any team member by clicking on the team member's name.

To join a team, follow the steps above. After selecting a team, click on "Join Our Team" at the top of the team's home page. You may only join teams that are accepting new members.

If you are unable to contribute online, you can print a donation form from the Web, or you may mail a check payable to "American Cancer Society" to Kristen Perso, American Cancer Society, 5110 S. Sprinkle Rd., Portage MI 49002-2050. Please write "Relay for Life of WMU" on the memo line of the check.
