WMU Relay for Life raises $44,700 and counting

April 14, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Relay for Life of Western Michigan University raised $44,700 for the American Cancer Society through the 24-hour walk-a-thon held Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, and contributions made before the end of August will be added to the total.

More than 600 people, mostly WMU students, participated in the fund-raiser at WMU's Kanley Track. There were 56 teams that participated, a record number for the WMU Relay, and 26 cancer survivors and caregivers attended the Survivor/Caregiver Celebration Friday evening, a modest increase over the number participating one year ago.

The top fund-raising team at the relay represented WMU faculty and staff and brought in $7,083 or about 15 percent of the total. Other top teams were Walk this Way with $3,963 raised, MedHeads with $3,107, St. Thomas More with $2,779 in contributions and Colleges Against Cancer with $2,652.

Individual fund raisers with the highest totals of online support--gifts made through the relay Web site--were WMU seniors Tim Hurttgam and Katie Stauffer and WMU staff members Bill Whisman and Shari Glaser.

Financial sponsors of the event included Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan, UBS Financial Inc. and Charles Zhang and Associates. Several local businesses and restaurants provided non-cash support.

Contributions to the American Cancer Society can be made online until the end of August through the Relay for Life of WMU or checks payable to American Cancer Society may be mailed to Relay for Life of WMU, American Cancer Society, 5110 S. Sprinkle Rd., Portage MI 49002-2050.
