WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News New CD features sultry tangos and jazz-fusionApril 20, 2006 KALAMAZOO--The Merling Trio, an internationally acclaimed faculty ensemble of the Western Michigan University School of Music, recently released a new CD, "The Music of Astor Piazolla and Frank Proto." The strings and piano trio features Renata Artman Knific, violin; Bruce Uchimura, cello; and Susan Wiersma Uchimura, piano. Their new work was featured in a CD-release concert March 31 in the Dalton Center. It combines the sultry tangos of Piazzolla with the cutting-edge jazz-fusion of Proto. Individual tracks on the new CD are: La Muerte del angel, tango (3:22) by Piazzolla; Milonga del angel, tango (7:19) by Piazzolla; Cuatro estaciones portenas (The Four Seasons), tango cycle (23:33) by Piazzolla; Revolucionario, tango (5:32) by Piazzolla; Oblivion, tango (3:43) by Piazzolla; and Quartet for piano & strings (22:58) by Proto. Known both for successful commissions of works by contemporary composers and interpretations of the standard repertoire, the Merling Trio has performed in 29 U.S. states, Canada and Great Britain.
