Deadline approaches for consolidating student loans

June 5, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Financial aid officers at Western Michigan University are reminding students this month of an important deadline for consolidating federal student loans.

Friday, June 30, is the final day for students to consolidate federal loans and lock in the current fixed interest rate. Effective July 1, interest rates will rise by nearly 2 percentage points.

Information about Federal Direct Consolidation Loans, including an online application and instructions for calculating the applicable interest rate, is available on the Web at www.loanconsolidation.ed.gov. Students can also get information by calling toll-free (800) 557-7392.
