Edwin E. Grossnickle

Dr. Edwin E. Grossnickle, professor emeritus of finance at Western Michigan University, died July 23 in Kalamazoo. He was 93.

Grossnickle joined the WMU faculty as an associate professor of business in 1957 and was promoted to professor two years later. He was a 1969 recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award, sponsored by the WMU Alumni Association, and was one of four WMU faculty members selected for the 1970 edition of Outstanding Educators of America. He retired with emeritus status in 1977.

His volunteer service included four years as treasurer of the Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education in the early 1960s.

Born May 14, 1913, in North Manchester, Ind., Grossnickle received a bachelor's degree in 1935 from Manchester College in his hometown. He then taught in a North Manchester high school for three years before earning a master's degree in 1939 from the University of Iowa. He worked in private business in Illinois for several years and was awarded a doctoral degree from Ohio State University in 1952.

Grossnickle is survived by his wife of 71 years, Victoria Fern (Dilling) Grossnickle, and by four of his five children, among others.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St., Kalamazoo. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Friends Fund of Friendship Village, Kalamazoo.
