Fall enrollment figures announced

Sept. 19, 2006

KALAMAZOO--The annual fall census of students enrolled at Western Michigan University shows a total enrollment of just less than 25,000, a decline of 5.3 percent since fall 2005's enrollment of 26,239.

Total enrollment, including both on- and off-campus figures stands at 24,841.

Despite the overall decline, the campus witnessed a better than 10 percent increase in the number of students pursuing doctoral degrees, while the overall number of new graduate students increased by 16.8 percent. WMU's on-campus population of all students pursuing graduate degrees also showed a slight increase of 0.7 percent.

The number of beginning freshmen at WMU for fall 2006 is 3,610, down 227 from last year's entering freshman class. Transfer student numbers were down slightly, with 1,604 new transfer students counted--just 12 fewer than in fall 2005.

The University experienced dramatic increases this fall in its distance education initiatives. While relatively small in comparison to overall enrollment, the number of students enrolled in distance education classes rose to 1,168, an increase of nearly 83 percent over the fall 2005 census tally of 639 students.
