Symphonic Band gives free Sunday afternoon concert

Oct. 16, 2006

KALAMAZOO--The University Symphonic Band opens its 2006-07 season with a free, public concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, in Miller Auditorium at Western Michigan University.

Two new works commissioned in consortium with other universities are featured on the program. David Maslanka's Symphony No. 7 and Michael Mower's "Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra," featuring guest soloist Trent Kynaston, will each receive their second performance since their premieres last spring by two of the consortium members. Kynaston is professor of saxophone in the WMU School of Music.

In addition, Sunday's concert will include Paul Hindemith's march from "Symphonic Metamorphosis" and Haydn Wood's classic "Mannin Veen."
