KFS presents Sundance Grand Prize winner

Nov. 20, 2006

KALAMAZOO--Kalamazoo Film Society presents "Quinceanera," Grand Prize winner at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Friday through Sunday, Dec. 1-3, in the Little Theatre at Western Michigan University.

Little Theatre show times for "Quinceanera" are 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday, 4:30, 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday; and 2:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 and $3 for students. The 2006 film is rated R for language and some sexual content and drug use.

Emily Rios plays Magdalena, who is preparing to celebrate her quinceanera, a festive rite of passage for young Latina women on their 15th birthday. Instead, she discovers she is pregnant, is thrown out of her parents' home and finds herself living with her gay cousin and elderly uncle in Echo Park, a
colorful section of Los Angeles undergoing changes of its own. Filmed on location, the movie is touching and tender, yet looks unflinchingly at human nature's not-so-endearing side as well.

The Little Theatre is located at the corner of Oakland Drive and Oliver Street on WMU's historic East Campus. There is free off-street parking behind the theatre. For more information, call the movie line at (269) 387-8221, or visit KFS at www.kalfilmsociety.net.
