WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News Memorial service set for Maria JonaitisJan. 10, 2007 Recent Western Michigan University retiree Maria Jonaitis died Jan. 6 in Chicago. She was 68. Jonaitis, who lived in Kalamazoo at the time of her death, retired from WMU in April 2006, after serving for more than 33 years in a variety of University offices. She spent the final 19 years of her time on campus as an office assistant in the Division of Multicultural Affairs. Jonaitis first joined the WMU staff in 1972 as a secretary in the Office of Admissions. She worked briefly in the Office of the President in 1976 before accepting a job later that year in the Office of Collective Bargaining, where she stayed until 1987. A campus memorial celebration of her life is planned for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, in Kanley Chapel. A reception will follow at the Oaklands. She is survived by three children. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Jonaitis' name to the West Michigan Cancer Center, 200 N. Park St., Kalamazoo MI 49007.
