Broncos set academic records and earn honors

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University varsity student-athletes excelled academically in fall semester 2006 both collectively and with individual academic honors.

Anthony Gebhart of the football team and Thalia Playford of the women's soccer team have been named District IV Academic First and Third Team selections, respectively. Playford of Sudbury, Ontario, is a marketing major and holds a 4.0 grade-point average. Gebhart of Addison, Ill., has a 3.81 GPA and is an economics major.

Nine student-athletes, including Gebhart and Playford, were named to the Mid-American Conference Academic teams in the fall. Also receiving all-conference academic honors were Katie Kelel and Jill Odom, cross country; Nate Meyer and Dominic Moran, football; Terry Dowding and Mark Kroeger, men's soccer; and Ashley Vogl, volleyball.

WMU student-athletes earned a composite 3.05 GPA for fall semester, which is the first recorded semester performance for the entire athletic program in excess of a "B" average.

Twenty student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs for fall semester: Brent Gerlach, baseball; Molly Dwyer, women's basketball; Tim Hiller, Dominic Moran and Nate Meyer, football; Erin Thorne, golf; Jenna Breen, gymnastics; Matt Clackson, Mark Letestu and Dave Krisky, hockey; Matt Morris, men's soccer; Alissa Burge, Thalia Playford, Sarah Phillips and Laura White, women's soccer; Melissa Brink, softball; Katie Kelel and Kristalyn Mauch, track; and Katie Eberling and Abby Gephart, volleyball.

The top team composite GPAs were recorded by women's tennis (3.56), men's tennis (3.45), gymnastics (3.40), volleyball (3.32), women's soccer (3.30), golf (3.25), hockey (3.18) and women's basketball (3.14).

A total of 168 students made the Bronco Academic Honor Roll for attaining a GPA for fall semester of 3.2 or better, including football (35 student-athletes), track and cross country (21), baseball (16), women's soccer (16), hockey (14), gymnastics (11), softball (10), men's soccer (8), women's basketball (8), men's basketball (7), volleyball (7), men's tennis (6), women's tennis (6) and golf (3).
