WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News WMU designers receive national honorsMarch 3, 2007 KALAMAZOO--Two staff members and one student from Western Michigan University were honored at the 2006 National Conference of the Association of University Interior Designers held last fall in New York City. The three are Sheri Harper, an
interior designer in the remodeling services office; Julie Lenczycki,
and interior designer in the architecture and interior design
office; and Karla Palnau, a
junior from Macomb, Mich., majoring in interior design. Sheri Harper received a first place design award in the category of "renovations under $50,000" for her work on the lounge near the Campustrends apparel store in the Bernhard Center. This is the second consecutive year she has one top awards in AUID's annual design competition. Last year, Harper won a first place design award in the category of "renovations over $150,000" for her work on the Campustrends store and a first place design award in the "new construction" category as well as "Best in Show" for her work on the WMU-Southwest branch campus facility in Benton Harbor. Harper, who joined WMU's staff in 2001 and immediately joined AUID, was elected this year to serve a two-year term as the professional association's publicist. Julie Lenczycki, a WMU alumna who joined the staff in 1987, has been elected to serve a two-year term as AUID's 1st vice president. She was the organization's publicist for the last four years and has served as scholarship chairperson a board member. An AUID member since 1987, Lenczycki, too, has done well in the annual design competition. Most recently, she picked up second place honors in 2003 for her work on the renovation of the Campus Services Building conference room. Karla Palnau won one of the two $1,000 scholarships AUID gives out annually to applicants from member universities across the country. To be eligible, applicants must be either juniors or seniors in good standing and be enrolled in interior design programs. An active member of the campus community, Palnau serves as the junior class representative for the Interior Design Student Organization and for the University's Interior Design Professional Advisory Board.
