Coming soon to a portal near you

May 15, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Beginning Sunday, May 20, Western Michigan University will launch a series of major functional improvements to GoWMU, the University's secure intranet portal.

"All of these improvements are based on suggestions and evaluations by hundreds of students and other users," says Lynn Kelly-Albertson, chair of the GoWMU Advisory Board and executive director of WMU's Career and Student Employment Services.

The changes are also based on best practices for campus portals, including one-click access to the most frequently used services and consolidation of channels and tabs.

"Fewer clicks, fewer tabs and fewer channels makes it much easier for students to find what they need according to all our surveys and student evaluations," says Kelly-Albertson.

Among the improvements:

Consolidation of key services previously found in multiple locations into one My Self-Service channel

One-click, single-sign-on access to course registration and other frequently used services

New universal icon access to academic catalogs and e-learning, previously called WebCT Vista

Login page improvements, including addition of help and tutorials where new users need them most--on the login page

Dozens of additional channels are still available through the List of Channels, so that students, faculty, staff and other users can customize their "personal portal to Western Michigan University."
