WMU Home > About WMU > WMU News Mercedes de CardenasJune 11, 2007 Mercedes de Cardenas, a Western Michigan University associate professor emerita of Spanish, died June 3 in Miami, Fla. She was 93. Originally from Cuba, Cardenas received her undergraduate degree from the University of Havana. She left Cuba in 1961 and earned her master's and doctoral degrees from Michigan State University. She came to WMU as a Spanish instructor in 1966 and retired in 1980. Funeral services for Cardenas were held in Miami. Memorial contributions may be made to First-Hand Aid, which provides humanitarian and medical relief for children in Cuba.
