June 22, 2007

BATTLE CREEK, Mich.--Pilots Jennifer Jakubiec and Alison Pierce represented Western Michigan University in the June 19-22 Air Race Classic, a 2,500-mile women's cross-country event that began in Oklahoma City and ended in St. John, New Brunswick.

Racers made stops in McCook, Neb.; Denison, Iowa; Jefferson City, Mo.; Bowling Green, Ky.; Lewisburg, W.Va.; Elmira, N.Y.; Burlington, Vt.; and Bangor, Maine.

Jakubiec is a WMU flight instructor and an April graduate of the College of Aviation. Pierce also is an April aviation graduate, who is now working on her flight instructor license. Both women were competing in their first Air Race Classic.

Below are reports from the two WMU aviators, beginning with their departure from Oklahoma City. Click on the date for the complete report.

June 22, St. John, New Brunswick--We made it to the finish line! We landed in St. John mid-morning, completing the 2007 Air Race Classic.

June 21, Bangor, Maine--We got off to a late start in West Virginia due to early morning fog, and were asked to do a live radio interview while we waited.

June 20, Lewisburg, W.Va.--The trip to Lewisburg was a new experience. The rolling hills of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia provided a scenic flight.

June 19, Jefferson City, Mo.--We departed Oklahoma City at 8:30 a.m. Our Cirrus out ran quite a few other planes.

June 18, Oklahoma City--We visited the 99s Museum and the Bricktown district of Oklahoma City. The Air Race Classic kicks-off at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
