Faculty author and alumna illustrator give local talks

July 25, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's Dr. Janet Ruth Heller will speak on writing and her award-winning children's book along with local illustrator and WMU alumna Amelia Hansen at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Kazoo Books Annex, 2413 Parkview in Kalamazoo.

Heller, who teaches English and women's studies at WMU, will discuss her book, "How the Moon Regained Her Shape." The book was selected for Children's Choices of 2007 by the Children's Book Council and the International Reading Association and in 2006 as a Book Sense Pick, a monthly and seasonal selection of new books chosen by independent booksellers.

Joining Heller will be Hansen, a Kalamazoo illustrator of "At the Dog Park with Sam and Lucy" and 18 other books that specialize in relationships between people, animals, plants and the earth. Hansen received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from WMU in 1987.

Earlier, at 5:30 p.m., the two will hold a session at the bookstore for writers and authors on the important points of getting a book written, printed, published and marketed. That session also will be at Kazoo Books Annex.
