Jerry L. Bloemsma

KALAMAZOO--Jerry L. Bloemsma, a longtime staff member at Western Michigan University, died suddenly Sept. 15 in the University of Michigan Medical Center. He was 63.

Bloemsma came to WMU in 1964 and spent 43 years with the University. He was employed by the WMU Barber Shop for 25 years, and served for the past 18 years as the postmaster of the WMU Bookstore's substation.

Bloemsma resided in Portage, Mich., and was a native of Zeeland, Mich. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne, a staff member in the WMU Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and by two children, two grandchildren and other relatives.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Portage Chapel. There will be a private family interment with full military honors in Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
