Family Weekend features football tailgate and more

Sept. 19, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Hundreds of parents and family members of new and returning Western Michigan University students will be in Kalamazoo to celebrate their campus involvement and share in the community spirit for WMU's 40th annual Family Weekend Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7.

Family Weekend honors the year-round commitment parents and family members show to the University. It gives them an excuse to visit loved ones who are away at school as well as a chance to experience what college life is like at WMU.

Events on campus and in surrounding communities will keep students and their family members entertained throughout the weekend. The activities will begin on Friday with campus exhibits and theatre productions as well as an Art Hop, blues performance and more in downtown Kalamazoo. Families also will be able to tour campus and enjoy the Student Recreation Center facilities and Gabel Pool at little or no cost with the new WMU Family Connection discount card.

Highlights of Family Weekend include Classes without Quizzes, an interest and information expo, college open houses, and the annual tailgate buffet and football game. The tailgate includes raffle prizes, food and fun for fans of all ages. The Bronco Marching Band, Buster Bronco, and WMU's new president and first lady, John and Linda Dunn, will be joining in the festivities.

Students and their families must register by Monday, Sept. 24, to attend the pre-game tailgate buffet. Tickets are $12 for WMU students and adults, and $10 for children 12 and younger. Pre-ordered tickets may be picked up at the Family Weekend Welcome Desk in the Bernhard Center from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Also available in the registration and welcome area will be: nametags; information packets; pre-ordered football, theatre and on-campus meal tickets; WMU Family Connection discount cards; and coupons for the WMU Bookstore.

Family Weekend is a program of the Office of Parent and Family Programs, which assists families in proactively supporting their students' growth, personal development and educational success. The office serves as a contact point, liaison and information gateway for the parents and family members of WMU students.
