Ad students snag three of seven statewide scholarships

Oct. 23, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Three advertising and promotion students in Western Michigan University's Haworth College of Business are among just seven students statewide to win 2007-08 scholarships from the Adcraft Club of Detroit's Adcraft Foundation.

All three students are seniors majoring in advertising and promotion and were nominated by Dr. Karen M. Lancendorfer, WMU assistant professor of marketing.

Bridget Jancarz, of Vicksburg, Mich., a member of the Lee Honors College, received a $4,000 scholarship. She completed an executive internship with Target last summer and is currently an intern at creative agency Biggs Gilmore Communications for the 2007-08 school year. Stacy Averill of Vicksburg, Mich., received a $3,000 scholarship. She is employed at WMU's Office of University Relations as a student design assistant, and last summer completed an internship with Detroit Diesel. Danielle Thayer of Battle Creek, Mich., received a $1,000 scholarship. She is also an intern at Biggs Gilmore Communications for the 2007-08 school year.

The Adcraft Club of Detroit is the nation's largest advertising club. Its foundation annually awards cash grants to advertising and marketing students from Michigan universities.

Students are nominated by faculty members and must submit an application and transcript, along with an essay demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the advertising business. Winners were presented their scholarships and honored at a luncheon reception, along with their faculty advisor.

"I am inspired by the passion and energy each of these students shows every day," Lancendorfer says. "They truly represent the next generation of the advertising industry."
