Students perform well-known comic operas

KALAMAZOO--Students of Western Michigan University's Opera Workshop will present scenes from six well-known comic operas and operettas at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the Dalton Center Recital Hall. Admission to the performance is free and open to the public.

The program, "Light Opera in the Piazza," will feature excerpts from famous works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gaetano Donizetti, and Gilbert and Sullivan. The operas represented include "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," "The Magic Flute," "Don Pasquale," "The Elixir of Love," and "HMS Pinafore." Scenes will be performed in the original languages with projected English translations.

Dr. Carl Ratner, WMU associate professor of music and director of opera, will lead the production. Scenes will be accompanied by James Naumann, pianist and graduate student at WMU.
