Volleyball Broncos win MAC West title

Nov. 12, 2007

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's volleyball team won the Mid-American Conference's West Division title for the first time since the 2000 season, and will have a first-round bye in the MAC Championship tournament.

Concluding its MAC regular season schedule this past weekend, WMU defeated the University of Toledo, 3-1, Friday night, and held Ball State University to a .009 hitting percentage en route to a 3-0 win Saturday night in front of 774 fans at University Arena in Kalamazoo.

The MAC Championship tournament is Nov. 16-18 at the Seagate Center in Toledo, Ohio. The Broncos (21-9 overall, 12-4 MAC) get the second seed in the tournament and will next play at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in the quarterfinal round. Their opponent will be the winner of Thursday's first round match between No. 7-seeded Eastern Michigan and the No. 10 seed, Akron.

East Division champion Ohio University is the tournament's top seed. Miami and Bowling Green are the third and fourth seeds, respectively.

If the Broncos advance, they will play a semi-final contest at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in which their likely opponent would be top-seeded Ohio. The championship final begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The winner of the MAC tournament gets an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. The Broncos last won the conference title in 2000.
