Presentation looks at Hindus in Kalamazoo

Jan. 1, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Dr. Nancy Falk, Western MIchigan University professor emerita of comparative religion, will discuss "Hindus in Kalamazoo" from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Heinig Emeriti Lounge in Walwood Hall on the University's East Campus. The program for WMU emeriti is open to the public free of charge.

Many Americans think of Hindus as people who live and work half a globe away. The reality is that, increasingly, we have Hindu neighbors, teachers, doctors, co-workers and bosses. Even in a city as typically Midwestern and American as Kalamazoo, there are a number of thriving Hindu communities, some made up almost wholly of immigrants from India and others consisting of converts to Hindu spiritual paths.

Falk's slide-illustrated talk will introduce several local Hindu communities: their origins, aims and the many creative adaptations they have made to able to take roots and thrive on American soil.

"Hindus in Kalamazoo" is part of the Wednesday II series sponsored by WMU's Emeriti Council. For information on other programs in the series, visit www.wmich.edu/emeriti/events.
