Nominations sought for student employee awards

Jan. 31, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Some 4,000 student workers at Western Michigan University and one of the school's former staff members will be recognized during the 22nd annual Student Employee Appreciation Week, Monday through Friday, Feb. 11-15.

The observance pays tribute to WMU's single largest employee group for the many ways its members contribute to the University. Activities taking place during the celebration include announcement of the University's student employee and supervisor of the year.

Career and Student Employment Services, which sponsors the week, also is recognizing Gary L. Belleville this year. In addition to renaming the student employee award for this former CSES official, he and his work serve as the theme for the week.

Belleville came to WMU in 1967 as a financial aid counselor, and he founded the Student Employment Referral Service--the University's first student employment office. He served as that office's director until retiring in 1993. The unit was subsequently incorporated into what is now CSES.

Nominations are being accepted through Feb. 4 for the Gary L. Belleville Student Employee of the Year award and the Supervisor of the Year award. The 2008 recipients will be feted during a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Bernhard Center's West Ballroom.

CSES encourages all faculty and staff members to submit award nominations and to thank student workers in some way during Student Employee Appreciation Week.

Go to www.broncojobs.wmich.edu and click on "Nominate" to obtain pre-printed certificates of appreciation by the Feb. 2 deadline, make an award nomination or obtain a list of suggestions for thanking students.
