Visiting scholar will discuss Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Feb. 14, 2008

KALAMAZOO--A visiting professor from Israel will speak about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during a Wednesday, Feb. 27, talk at Western Michigan University. The free public lecture by Dr. Neve Gordon of Ben-Gurion University will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Fetzer Center.

The author of a new book, "Israel's Occupation," about to be published by the University of California Press, Gordon will address the prospects for peace and explore the impact of a number of recent developments and their impact on the daily lives of Israelis and Palestinians. Those events include Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, Hamas' landslide victory in 2006 elections, ongoing missile fire on Israeli towns and a siege imposed on Gaza.

Gordon, a lecturer at Ben-Gurion since 1999, will also speak earlier in the day. He will discuss "Human Rights Non-Government Organization Work in Theory and Practice" at 2 p.m. in Room 3502 of Knauss Hall and "From Colonization to Separation: Making Sense of Israel's Occupation" at 3:30 p.m. in Room 3301 of Friedmann Hall. Both events are free and open to the public, but the earlier talk is geared toward undergraduate students and the later seminar to graduate students and faculty.

Gordon is an Israeli and U.S. citizen and the former executive director of Physicians for Human Rights in Israel. He has been a visiting scholar at Brown University and the University of California-Berkley. He earned doctoral and master's degrees in political science from the University of Notre Dame and his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Hebrew University.

Gordon's visit is part of WMU's Visiting Scholars and Artists Program and is being coordinated by the Institute of Government and Politics.
