New Web site offers Bronco license plate information

April 10, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Do you think that "WMUROX?" Want to tell the world you're an "'08ALUM" of WMU?

Bronco fans have a new Web site that serves as a one-stop shop for information about how to add a Western Michigan University touch to their car by ordering a Michigan license plate with the University's Bronco logo.

With a visit to www.wmich.edu/wmuplates, members of the WMU community can get complete information on how to order a Bronco plate through Michigan's University License Plate Program. The site details initial and recurring costs for a Bronco plate, how much WMU receives for each plate ordered and how to order a personalized Bronco plate. The site includes a downloadable order form that can be used to purchase a plate by fax or mail, and offers a link to the Secretary of State's "Plate It Your Way" site to check availability of personalized messages.

Bronco motorists pay an additional $35 over their annual vehicle registration fee for the WMU plate, with $25 of that fee going directly to the University's unrestricted fund. There is an additional charge of $30 for a personalized plate. Bronco plates can be renewed annually for a $10 addition to the vehicle registration fee. That $10 fee goes directly to the University. Secretary of State figures show that university plates have raised more than $8.3 million since their introduction in 2000. WMU sees average annual income of about $70,000 from plate purchases.

Special university plates have been available since 2000 for all 15 of Michigan's public universities. With nearly 5,000 Bronco plates on the road, WMU loyalists currently rank third among those who purchase university plates, although Central Michigan plate purchases are not far behind. Michigan State University is in first place with 32,459 green "S" plates licensed in the state. U-M fans and alums come in second at 24,199.
