Communication honor society inducts 61 studentsApril 24, 2008 KALAMAZOO--Sixty-one Western Michigan University students were inducted this spring into the Eta Rho chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honor society for undergraduate students. This year's inductees were recognized April 9 during a mid-day ceremony at the Bernhard Center on WMU's main Kalamazoo campus. Friends, family and faculty mentors looked on as students were awarded emblems by Dr. Steven Rhodes, director of WMU's School of Communication, and Dr. Rebekah Farrugia, assistant professor of communication and faculty advisor for Lambda Pi Eta. Undergraduate students at WMU who are majoring in communication are eligible to join the chapter if they have completed at least 60 credits of coursework, with 12 credits in communication. They also must have attained a grade point average of 3.0 or higher overall and 3.25 or higher in their communication courses. More than 1,500 students are enrolled in one of the seven major programs and three minor programs offered by the School of Communication, which is the largest department in WMU's College of Arts and Sciences. Only the top 5 percent of Western's communication students are selected to join the honor society. Lambda Pi Eta encourages professional development among communication scholars and provides its members with opportunities to exchange ideas in the field of communication. It establishes close relationships and mutual understanding between faculty and students, and allows undergraduate students to explore options for furthering their education. 2008 Lambda Pi Eta inductees Nichole Allen of Allegan, Mich., is a senior majoring in public relations.
