Edsel Lee EricksonJuly 24, 2008 Edsel Lee Erickson, a 21-year faculty member at Western Michigan University, died July 17 in Traverse City, Mich. He was 79. Erickson, who did extensive work with the capacity of education to improve the human condition, came to WMU in 1965 as an assistant professor and retired in 1986 as professor emeritus of education and professional development. He and his late wife, Ruth, began a publishing business, Learning Publications, which provided resources for educators and human service providers. The couple also started the Safe Schools Coalition, a national organization dedicated to reducing violence. He earned his bachelor's degree at Central Michigan University and master's and doctoral degrees at Michigan State University. A family memorial service was held July 23 in Arcadia, Mich.
