Road closings announced for Homecoming race

Sept. 15, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Several campus roads and parking areas at Western Michigan University will be closed for varying periods the morning of Saturday, Oct. 4, to accommodate the 10th annual Homecoming Campus Classic 1K and 5K run/walk.

"Both visitors to campus and groups planning homecoming events for Saturday morning need to be aware of the road closings, which will affect access to nearly every building on West Campus," says Thom Myers, WMU director of electronic communication and a longtime organizer of the race.

The 1K Fun Run for kids begins as usual at 8:15 a.m., but follows a new route, beginning and ending on West Michigan Avenue in front of Seibert Administration Building, passing the sundial and flag poles at the center of campus and looping around the Chemistry Building.

There are no significant changes in the route or timing of the 5K race from recent years. The 5K begins at 9 a.m.

Road closings

West Michigan Avenue in front of the Bernhard Center and the parking lots along that section of West Michigan will be closed to all traffic from 6 to 11 a.m. This includes the parking lots in front of Henry Hall, Seibert Administration Building and Kanley Chapel.

Most other affected roads and lots will be closed for less than one hour at varying times between 8:45 to 10 a.m. during the actual running of the 5K race. Access will be limited to nearly every building on the central West Campus during the 5K. Roads and lots will be opened to traffic as soon as the last runners and walkers have cleared the adjacent parts of the race route.

Questions about the race courses and road closings may be referred to Thom Myers, Office of University Relations, at thom.myers@wmich.edu or (269) 387-8710. Information about the 2008 Homecoming Campus Classic, including race registration, volunteer sign up, and PDF maps for both the 1K and 5K races, can be found online.
