Trustees vote to approve new AAUP contractSept. 24, 2008 KALAMAZOO--Meeting in special session today, the Western Michigan University Board of Trustees voted to approve a new three-year contract with the University's faculty union, the WMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Trustees approved the contract by a vote of 5-2. The contract effective date is Sept. 6, 2008. In recommending the package to the board for approval, WMU President John M. Dunn said the contract reflected the hard work over the past several months of bargaining teams from the administration and the AAUP. He called the contract "a competitive compensation package for our faculty, who certainly work hard to serve this University with distinction." The new contract includes an across-the-board increase of 3 percent in each of the three years of the contract plus a research/scholarly/creative activities supplement each year that is based on median salary within faculty rank. Modifications to the existing health care plan also were part of the agreement. Members of both negotiating teams attended the board meeting. Following the vote, AAUP President Paul Wilson extended his thanks to the board for its approval of the contract and thanked both teams for their work.
