WMUK plans shortened fund-raising drive

Oct. 14, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's public radio station WMUK will once again shorten its pledge drive and reduce on-air pledge hours by more than 50 percent during pledge drive week.

Organizers of the station's fall fund drive say the campaign will be short as well as "skinny" in the middle, with only one hour of on-air pledging in both the morning and evening on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 21-22. They encourage listeners to donate prior to the drive, which is scheduled to begin on Oct. 18. To contribute online, visit wmuk.org and choose "pledge."

"Pre-drive mail and online support will play a key role in helping us reach our $200,000 goal and keep our drive short," says Gordon Bolar, the station's development director.

To date, mail-in contributions and pledging online have helped WMUK make substantial progress toward its goal. An online ticker shows up-to-date results of the station's drive.

Funds raised through the drive help pay for acquisition costs of quality programs from National Public Radio, Public Radio International, the BBC and American Public Media. The pledge drive also helps cover costs for local program production.

WMUK will enlist the support of more than 80 volunteers to answer pledge calls during the drive. Those interested in volunteering can more information online at wmuk.org.
