Students sponsor workshop on social justice

Nov. 12, 2008

KALAMAZOO--"Working for Social Justice as an Ally," a one-day workshop, will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Fire Historical and Cultural Arts Collaborative, 1249 Portage St., Kalamazoo.

Advance registration is required for the event, which is free and open to the public and includes lunch. Visit www.kzoocoop.org/retreat for a registration form.

Using games, discussions groups and Theater of the Oppressed techniques, the workshop will examine the effects of power, privilege and oppression on individual people, local communities and larger societies. Participants will learn to identify behavior that is hurtful and ways to be supportive and empowering.

Kalamazoo Collective Housing, a registered student organization of Western Michigan University, is sponsoring the workshop. Visit www.kzoocoop.org/retreat for more information.
