Renowned percussionist performs with WMU bands

Nov. 19, 2008

KALAMAZOO--Western Michigan University's concert and symphonic bands will share the stage with special guest soloist and internationally renowned percussionist Bob Becker Sunday, Nov. 23.

The free concert will begin at 3 p.m. in Miller Auditorium and will feature the works of Ingolf Dahl, Aaron Copland, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob.

Becker, who will perform ragtime selections on xylophone with the University Symphonic Band, is considered by critics to be one of the world's premier performers on the xylophone and marimba. His work toward resurrecting the repertoire and performance styles of early 20th-century xylophone music has been recognized around the world.

Dr. Robert Spradling, director of WMU bands, leads the University Symphonic Band. John Lychner, WMU professor of music, directs the University Concert Band.
