Few campus services open during holiday recessDec. 14, 2008 KALAMAZOO--Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning at noon Wednesday, Dec. 24, and will reopen with the start of spring semester Monday, Jan. 5. Holiday recess began with the end of fall semester Dec. 13, and many campus services are already closed or have reduced hours through the start of spring semester. Public events on campus during holiday recess include art exhibits in the Richmond Center for Visual Arts and Bronco men's and women's basketball games in University Arena. Visit the Events Calendar for up-to-date listings. Residence halls reopen at 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4. Spring semester begins at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555. Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center Web site. All facilities and mall stores are on reduced hours through Monday, Jan. 5, and the entire building is closed beginning at noon Wednesday, Dec. 24, and reopens Friday, Jan. 2. Campus computing The Help Desk is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays Dec. 15-19 and 22-23, and 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 24; closes at noon Dec. 24; reopens noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 4; and resumes normal hours Monday, Jan. 5. Keypad computer lab in the Bronco Mall is closed and reopens at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. University Computing Center lab is open reduced hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, Dec. 15-19 and 22-23; open 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 24; closed Dec. 25-28; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 29-31; closed Jan. 1-3; open noon to 5 p.m. Jan. 4; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Sindecuse Health Center, including the pharmacy, is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, Dec. 15-19 and 22-23; open 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 24; closed Dec. 25-28; open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 29-30; closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1; open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 2; closed Jan. 3-4; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers. Student Recreation Center hours are available on the center's Web site. The center is open reduced hours 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 15-19, noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 20-21, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 22-23; closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 1; open noon to 7 p.m. Jan. 3-4; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. Unified Clinics closes at noon Dec. 24 and reopens Monday, Jan. 5. The University Substance Abuse Clinic will remain open on reduced hours throughout the holiday closure. Waldo Library is open reduced hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 15-19; closed Dec. 20-21; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 22-23 and 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 4; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5. To reduce energy costs during holiday recess and closure, temperature settings in most campus buildings will be reduced to no lower than 55 degrees. Residence halls that are vacant will be set back starting Dec. 13. Classrooms will set back beginning Dec. 14. Office spaces will be set back starting Dec. 25. All residence halls will be back to normal temperature by Jan. 2. All other areas will be back to the normal temperature setting of 70 degrees by Jan. 5, when the University reopens.
