Joseph T. HoyJan. 5, 2009 Dr. Joseph T. Hoy, former Western Michigan University athletic director, died Dec. 23 in Naples, Fla. He was 90. Hoy, a former professor emeritus and athletic director from 1967-78, was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 1979. A member of WMU's staff for 27 years, he also was head of the department of physical education for men and coached football, basketball and baseball before assuming the athletic directorship. During his tenure as athletic director, WMU added hockey, soccer and gymnastics to its men's intercollegiate program and undertook a scholarship program for 10 women's sports. He also supervised the renovation and building of several athletic facilities. Prior to joining WMU, Hoy had considerable experience in coaching and teaching at Ohio University, the University of Michigan and Wisconsin State College. A WMU graduate, Hoy served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 during World War II as a gunnery officer aboard aircraft carriers in the Pacific. After the war, he earned his master's degree from the University of Michigan and later earned a doctoral degree from Indiana University. After his retirement from WMU in 1979, Hoy became director of sports administration at Biscayne College, now St. Thomas University, in Miami. A memorial service for Hoy was held in Naples.
